Terms Definition
2SLGBTQIA+ An acronym used to refer to individuals in the two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and or questioning, intersex and asexual communities. The + is inclusive of people who identify as part of sexual and gender-diverse communities who use additional terminologies.
Accessibility The practice of creating inclusive and equitable learning opportunities for all learners.
Anti-Racism The active process of identifying and challenging racism by changing systems and structures, policies and practices, and attitudes to redistribute power equitably.
Assessment An ongoing process of collecting information on student learning throughout a 
course of study.
Assessment Task A communicative language task that is a formal assessment of learning, usually completed towards the end of a theme or module. Assessment tasks can be included in the learner’s portfolio.
Assessment Tool A tool which is included with a productive (speaking or writing) assessment task, 
such as a checklist, scale or rubric.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence 
and problem-solving capabilities.
Asynchronous A learning delivery mode that allows learners to access course materials and complete them on their own time without interacting with an instructor in real-time.
Avenue An online learning management system (LMS) that provides space for LINC classes.
BIPOC An acronym that refers to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour that recognizes the unique racial experiences faced by Black and Indigenous individuals, as well 
as other people of colour.
Blended A learning delivery mode combining online and in-person learning.
Canadian Language
Benchmarks (CLB) The official Canadian standards for describing, measuring and recognizing the language proficiency of adult immigrants and prospective immigrants in both English and French.
Centre for Canadian Language
Benchmarks (CCLB) The CCLB is the centre of expertise in support of the national standards in English and French for describing, measuring and recognizing second language proficiency of adult immigrants and prospective immigrants for living and working in Canada.
Competency-Based An approach that focuses on what learners can do with the English they’ve learned. Competencies focus on applying learned knowledge and skills through demonstrable, measurable outcomes.
Digital Literacy The ability to access, critically examine and use digital (online) content such as apps, tools and platforms in a responsible manner. 
EAL Literacy Learner A learner, typically with fewer than 9 years of formal education in any language, who is in the process of developing literacy skills and strategies while they are also learning English.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
(EDI) The values and beliefs around fair treatment and accessibility for all people, particularly those who have faced underrepresentation or discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, disability, religion and other attributes.
eLearning Activity A learning activity that is completed digitally (online).
ePortfolio A digital (online) collection of evidence of learning that can contain an inventory, reflections, peer assessment, skill-using tasks and assessment tasks.
Formative Assessment Also known as assessment for learning, is an ongoing process of collecting feedback on student learning throughout a course of study.
Francophone Someone whose primary language is French. This term encompasses both linguistic proficiency and cultural and historical connections.
Gender-Based Analysis
(GBA) Plus An analytical tool adopted by the Government of Canada to support the development of inclusive processes, policies and programs.
Goals Specific language objectives that provide direction, motivation and a sense of accomplishment.
Hybrid A learning delivery mode where the instructor is simultaneously teaching learners 
in-person and online.
Hybrid-Flexible (hy-flex) A variation on the hybrid learning delivery mode that offers more flexibility by allowing students to choose in-person or online classes according to their situation 
at any given time.
Indigenization The act or process of recognizing the validity of Indigenous worldviews, knowledge and ways of learning and integrating them into educational approaches.
Immigration, Refugees
and Citizenship Canada The department of the Government of Canada  that is responsible for matters 
dealing with immigration to Canada, Refugees and Canadian citizenship.
Indigenous Peoples The original inhabitants of the land that is now Canada, comprised of three distinct groups: First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples.
Intercultural Competence The ability to relate effectively and appropriately with people from different cultural backgrounds and across cultural contexts.
Intersectionality The complex way in which multiple forms of discrimination can combine, overlap, 
or intersect, especially for marginalized individuals or groups.
Learning Management System
(LMS) A platform that enables the online delivery of learning activities. 
Avenue is an example of an LMS.
LearnIT2teach Courseware, training and professional development for language instructors 
that integrates technology to support the teaching and settlement of learners.
Literacy The collection of skills, strategies and knowledge that allow a person to read 
and write with accuracy, fluency and automaticity.
Media Literacy The ability to access, critically examine and use media content such as print, radio, television or online media in a responsible manner.
Needs Refers to the specific requirements or gaps that must be addressed to achieve desired outcomes, and can include the learning styles, specific language goals, immediate real-life context and expressed topics of interest of learners.
New Language
Solutions (NLS) A Canadian charity that creates technology-based solutions to assist newcomers and adult learners in achieving their language learning and settlement goals.
National LINC Placement
and Progression Guidelines
(NLPPG) Guidance for placing and progressing learners in LINC courses based on their 
CLB profiles.
Numeracy The skills, strategies and knowledge to understand and work with numbers, including in areas of operations, money, measurement, time and data.
Online Learning A learning delivery mode where part or all of the learning process takes place online in a synchronous or asynchronous format.
Outcomes Statements that describe what a learner should be able to do at the end 
of a course or program.
Portfolio A collection of evidence of learning that can contain an inventory, reflections, 
peer assessment, skill-using tasks and assessment tasks.
Portfolio-Based
Language Assessment (PBLA) A teaching and assessment model created to improve nationwide consistency 
and standards of quality in language training for adult newcomers to Canada.
Realia Real-life materials or objects used in the classroom to enhance learning.
Real-World Task (RWT) A communicative instance of language use to accomplish a specific purpose in a particular context.
Reflection Task An activity to think about your learning: consider what you did well, what you had difficulty with and what you should do next to continue learning.
Self-Directed Learning which is entered into and guided by the learner, using resources and or curriculum but without direct instruction.
Skill A broad area of language use: there are four skills in the CLB: 
listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Skill-Building Activity A learning activity which focuses on developing some of the skills 
and vocabulary necessary to complete a real-world task.
Skill-Using Task An informal learning task that can be used as assessment for learning, 
to practice for an assessment task and to use language in an informal context.
Sociolinguistic The effect of any or all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations and context, on language and the ways it is used.
Summative Assessment Also known as assessment of learning; formal assessment for the purposes 
of demonstrating learning.
Synchronous A learning delivery mode where the instructor and learners are interacting digitally (online) in real time.
Task-Based An approach to language teaching and learning that centres around 
the completion of real-world communicative tasks.
Theme Subjects that provide unifying social contexts for learning, such as health, education, employment, community and so on.
Topic A specific focus within the general theme; for example, topics for health could be filling a prescription, making an appointment, reading a nutrition label and so on.
Trauma-Informed Practice The recognition of the possible impact of trauma and the practice of creating 
safer learning environments for all learners.
Universal Design for Learning
(UDL) An approach to instruction that guides the development of flexible learning environments and spaces that can accommodate individual learning differences.
