Welcome to the National LINC Curriculum Guidelines
Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) are English language classes funded by the Government of Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) department. They are available for newcomers who are permanent residents or protected persons.
The National LINC Curriculum Guidelines (NLCG) serve as a resource for instructors to plan and implement effective language training that supports learners in developing both knowledge and skill-based competencies in English. It’s important to note that the NLCG is not a curriculum; it is designed to support and provide a framework for teaching resources and materials.
The NLCG is organized into three main areas of focus: Essential Components, Real-World Task Guidelines and Detailed Sample Tasks.
The National LINC Curriculum Guidelines were created based on the needs identified by stakeholders across the LINC community. Please note that the CLIC Framework and Guidelines were created separately but is informed by elements of the NLCG to ensure Pan-Canadian consistency between the CLIC and LINC Curriculum. The CLIC Curriculum components have their unique specific features based on consultations and a field survey involving the CLIC community, accounting for Francophone contexts.

Essential
Components
Essential Components provide overarching basic information on concepts and principles inherent to LINC and instructional practices. You will find these listed at the top of every page and can use them to expand or refresh your knowledge.
Real-World Task
Guidelines
Real-World Task Guidelines have been updated with new and modernized themes, and include sample tasks, instructional considerations and additional information that can assist in planning your instruction.
Detailed Sample
Tasks
Detailed Sample Tasks break the sample tasks down further with additional ideas for skill-building activities and assessment with more in-depth considerations of ensuring an inclusive environment for all learners. These are designed as exemplars to help guide planning and there is not a corresponding detailed sample task for every real-world task.
