Teaching Considerations
Cultural Considerations:
- Cultural considerations can play a large part in expectations and needs during childbirth. Immigrant women may experience barriers to accessing health care during pregnancy and may need additional support in navigating the healthcare system.
- Cultural expectations around pregnancy and childbirth are varied and are a reflection of Canada being a diverse place which has people from many different cultures.
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenization Strategies:
Instructors can:
- Use diverse representations of people in all your learning resources and images, including people who are 2SLGBTQIA+, Indigenous, Francophone and of other cultures, and people who have disabilities or who are neurodivergent.
- Recognize that people who identify as women may not have had independent access to medical professionals and health care. Make sure these learners are aware of their rights in Canada and the resources that are available to them.
Trauma-informed Strategies:
Possible Trauma Triggers:
- Learners who have experienced trauma may find discussions of health care triggering.
- Discussions of childbirth may be triggering for learners who have experienced trauma.
Strategies:
- Give learners advance warning of this topic and be aware that there may be learners who require support.
- Learners have the right to choose if, when and what they share about themselves.
- Make space for learners to feel safe and recover from the experience of sharing their experiences.
