Sample Skill-Building Activities:

  • Match visuals of clothing to words.
  • Elicit experiences with hospital visits and related vocabulary.
  • Copy a list of words related to packing an overnight bag.
  • Look at a picture of a woman in hospital with a newborn baby and label the key words.
  • Create a word wall for vocabulary related to packing an overnight bag.
  • Create a short, simple instructor-made story on the topic,  and have learners listen as the instructor reads, following with their finger. Have learners repeat after the instructor to match intonation and fluency. Finally, have learners read the story as a group, and then individually. These activities practice vocabulary in context, show relevancy of the language and improve fluency.
  • In pairs, read aloud a short, simple role play conversation about packing for a short trip.
  • Read three simple 3-4 word instructions and circle key words.

Sample Skill-Using Tasks:

  • Listen to a few sentences about the contents of an overnight bag and circle the words that you hear from a longer list.
  • Listen to a highly simplified conversation between two people talking about packing for a trip and choose what they are packing from visuals.

Sample Assessment Tasks:
