Specialized Classes

Some LINC learners have learning needs that a standard LINC class is unable to adequately meet. Some organizations can offer specialized LINC classes for these specific groups of learners. Specialized classes group learners based on factors other than or in addition to CLB level. These classes are usually designed to:

  • provide extra support or accessibility
  • move more quickly or more slowly
  • target specific skills or themes
  • include specific content or otherwise meet the learning needs of a specific group

Some examples of specialized classes include courses for seniors, youth, mothers and babies, learners who are Deaf, biliteracy to help EAL literacy learners improve EAL literacy in both English and their first language, classes for a specific language or cultural group, and so on.

Not all service providers can offer specialized classes. As an instructor, learn about the specialized classes available in your community so you can provide information about them or refer learners to them. It is important to confirm that learners who are part of a target group actually want to be placed in a specialized class.

EAL Literacy Learners

EAL literacy learners are typically placed in classes within the separate EAL literacy stream, from Foundation L to CLB 4L where these classes are available. If there are no dedicated EAL literacy classes available, EAL literacy learners are placed in mainstream classes. Some EAL literacy learners may also benefit from some of these specialized classes, depending on their other needs. However, there is no guarantee that specialized classes will help EAL literacy learners to build EAL literacy skills.
