Avenue
Avenue is an online learning management system (LMS) which provides space for LINC classes. It uses the Moodle platform. Avenue belongs to New Language Solutions (NLS). Instructors must be working in a LINC program to access Avenue. Avenue is the technology solution for LINC and CLIC, as well as Ontario Adult Language Training.
Instructors can set up classes with interactive LINC activities and tasks. Avenue also provides the following:
- access to other courses in more specialized areas, such as employment or education related. You can find this in the Avenue course builder.
- online spaces for collaboration and discussion for both learners and instructors such as webinars and podcasts for instructors and administrators, or learner forums that can be setup in virtual classes.
Avenue can be used for online, blended, hybrid or hy-flex classes. Instructors have the flexibility to customize their courses by selecting modules through Avenue’s Course Builder function, by uploading materials or modules from Tutela and or by creating their own Moodle activities.
Avenue provides many resources, including:
- an electronic learner portfolio to allow learners to collect artefacts
- a virtual space for instructors to store digital resources
- an attendance tracker for instructors to check how much time their learners spend working in class
- tools for monitoring learners and tracking their progress such as grader report (gradebook), participant profile, badges and so on
- an LMS for CLIC, the French equivalent of LINC
- the ability to sign in to Tutela, integrating with their learning resources
Avenue Training
LINC Instructors can access four stages of Avenue training with the support of a mentor. Your program administrator can register you for this training. Administrators, program leaders and aspiring or current lead teachers can earn a certificate in Avenue Leadership by completing ten micro-credential courses plus a capstone assignment. To enrol, contact admin@learnit2teach.ca.
EAL Literacy Learners
EAL Literacy learners face additional challenges in online learning. They may not have digital EAL literacy skills for navigating online spaces effectively and they are still learning the EAL literacy skills needed for reading print documents and printing by hand. EAL literacy learners can learn effectively online with careful consideration and support. Instructors can use EAL literacy specific resources by selecting modules or activities through Avenue’s Course Builder function, by uploading materials or modules from Tutela and or by creating their own Moodle activities.
When you are working with EAL literacy learners online, remember that all learning resources, whether print or online, must be at an appropriate language and EAL literacy level. This includes recommendations for formatting such as font, font size, visual literacy and white space.
