Sample Skill-Building Activities:

  • Always greet each learner as they come into class, using a variety of greetings
    and building over time:
hi, hello, good morning / afternoon / evening, it’s nice to see you, and so on.
  • Begin each class by going around the room and having a simple conversation with each learner: Hi, how are you? I’m fine, thanks. It’s nice to see you today. Have learners repeat the conversation with a partner.
  • Learn a simple pattern and practice with a partner: Hi, my name is ______. I am from ______.
  • Discuss as a class: what is a job? How do you get a job in Canada? Who has a job in Canada? What do you do? Who had a job before coming to Canada? What did you do?
  • Elicit a simple LEA (Language Experience Approach) story from the class about having a job. Write on the board and then as a bookfold. Read together. Give each learner an index card with a word from the story and have them match their card to the word in the story.
  • Use vocabulary cards with words and clear pictures to practice jobs vocabulary. Play games such as Bingo, matching, and Memory.
  • Read a very simple instructor-made story about going to a job interview in Canada. Use strips with simple words and pictures. Work together with a partner to sequence the events in the story.
  • Practice the story frequently, reading to the class as well as echo and choral reading.
  • Read People at Work on a computer or other device. Learn how to click or tap to change the pages and how to play the audio for the story.
  • Listen to a simple dialogue at a job interview and practice with a partner. Perform your dialogue for the class.
  • Copy simple jobs to complete sentence stems, e.g. I want to be a _______.

Sample Skill-Using Tasks:

  • Role-play an introduction with a classmate: Hi. Hello, my name is ________. It’s nice to meet you. It’s nice to meet you, too.

Sample Assessment Tasks:
