Sample Skill-Building Activities:

  • Every day at the start of class, write the day of the week on the board and say it aloud while pointing to it. Have learners repeat: Today is Monday (Tuesday/Wednesday/
    and so on).
  • Sing along to Days of the Week Song or Days of the Week Song (Addams Family Tune).
  • Post a large, clear photograph of a kitchen garbage bin on the board alongside a photograph of garbage sitting at the curb and garbage being put into a garbage truck. Elicit words from learners such as garbage, house, kitchen, truck, man, woman, and so on.
  • Assign each task vocabulary word an action and practice the vocabulary using TPR (Total Physical Response). Call out a vocabulary word and have learners respond with the correct action.
  • Repeat TPR using vocabulary cards with clear photographs. Call out a word and have learners hold up the correct card.
  • Play Bingo with vocabulary cards taped
    to a simple Bingo card.
  • Incorporate phonics activities based on vocabulary words and other vocabulary related to the topic.
  • Use air writing and sand trays to practice letter formation: lowercase and capital letters.
  • Trace lowercase and capital letters.
  • Trace and copy the day of the week.
  • Read a very simple instructor-made story with single words and pictures about taking out garbage, e.g. Tuesday. Garbage day! Garbage. Truck. Read the story to learners and then choral read and echo read the story.
