Activities and Tasks

Sample Skill-Building Activities:

  • As a class, list favourite foods from different cultures.
  • Have learners use picture cards of international food items to orally identify the food products.
  • Use picture cards to show a partner foods you eat in your culture.
  • As a class, elicit and list places learners usually shop for food. Using street view in a mapping app, such as Google Maps, look at these places together.
  • If needed, have learners practise forming and identifying numbers with straight lines and curves.
  • Have learners practice counting and saying the names of numbers 0 to 20.
  • Prepare manipulatives for letters (e.g., magnetic letters or letter cards). Say a food word and have learners identify the initial sound and select the corresponding letter.
  • Learners copy names of familiar places in their community.
  • From a short, simple instructor-made story on the topic, have learners listen as the instructor reads, following with their finger. Have learners repeat after the instructor to match intonation and fluency. Finally, have learners read the story as a group, and then individually.
  • Learners practice comparing what they’ve copied to the original to check for accuracy. Introduce strategies to check for accuracy, such as counting letters in a word, and using a finger to compare letter for letter, without losing track of which letter is compared.
  • As a class, look at a map of the neighbourhood around your school or organization and identify 3 to 4 familiar street names.
  • Copy the name of a food from your culture underneath a photograph of that food. Share with your classmates.
  • In pairs, learners practice saying the address of the school or organization.
